Organ donation was never a trending topic amongst my peers or family; in fact, I considered the concept trivial until 2 years ago, when my mother registered as an organ donor at the DMV. Upon hearing the news of her decision, I immediately implored her to reconsider - naturally, she asked, "Why?"
"Because..."
And that's about how far I got in trying to find out reasons why people generally shouldn't donate their organs. Do they have a purpose after death? Not really. Can they potentially save other people's lives? Absolutely.
While my analysis of organ donation registration may have been straightforward to say the least, I realized this wasn't the case for everybody; not because people are naturally against organ donation, but because they lack the accessible and clearcut resources necessary to make proactive, comprehensive decisions. Shortly afterwards in September of 2023, I established and headed Crofton House School's Organ Donation Awareness Initative, where we continue to utilize educational yet engaging means of learning to combat the lack of ingenuity and personalization traditionally found in donor registration efforts. As an aspiring pre-medical student and now incoming freshman at Johns Hopkins University, my passions remain targeted against reducing the national shortage of organ donors, one informed individual at a time.
